Malcolm and Jeannie Hohlt-Wade Malcolm and Jeannie Hohlt-Wade, on a visit to Victoria, BC, in 2002

"As Sam Wades grandfather and a prostate cancer sufferer myself I can not express too deeply my admiration for Sam and his friends undertaking to cross Canada on their bicycles to make people aware of the disease and raise funds for cancer prostate research.

Undoubtedly many people have heard of prostate cancer but regretably believe it could never aflict them or their family as indeed did I. Nothing can be more horrifying than waking up in a hospital bed with a doctor looking down on you and saying "You have prostate cancer". I assure you your world stops and life is brought to a sudden terrible halt.

Thanks to recent research which resulted in my receiving treatment with the very latest and effective drugs some nineteen months after being diagnosed, I am, although still on treatment, in recovery, leading a normal lifestyle and looking forward to the future,as indeed are many others in Canada, a future which would not have been possible but for prostate cancer research which is always looking for the answers to this terrible disease which takes so many lives each year.

Sam and his friends are giving their all pedalling across Canada in all weathers to make everyone aware of prostate cancer.

I ask that you support them by donating as little or as much as you can to their fund to enable research to continue so that persons such as I,or maybe someone near and dear to you who hear those terrible words, "You have prostate cancer "know that there is a future for them also, a future I am so lucky to have.

May the dollars roll in as the pedals go round."

Sam Wades Grandfather.

Malcolm and Jeannie Hohlt-Wade are Sam Wade's grandparents. Malcolm Hohlt-Wade is a prostate cancer survivor. In late 2008 Malcolm underwent emergency prostate cancer surgery where two large tumours were expertly removed. Surgery was followed by over a year of treatment, including chemotherapy. In February 2010 Malcolm was advised the treatment had been successful and that he would be receiving a "I'm a Cancer Survivor" tee-shirt from the hospital! He continues to monitor his health through regular blood tests. Malcolm and Jeannie are sponsoring Sam's charity to help someone else survive.

Terry Spence
Terry Spence has been talk show host for many years, including CFAX for more than twenty-two years. Living a life to make the world better through the respect that he carries for others, he is now working at the Prostate Centre in Victoria. He has agreed to become a large part of the Pedalers for Prostate team by assisting in the planning as well as covering all bases when it comes to his forte - the media. From his years of experience, he has been an invaluable source of wisdom and good spirit, and Pedalers for Prostate would not be the same without him.

John Wagontall
John Wagontall
As someone who has done the cross-Canada trip in the past, John Wagontall is an invaluable asset to Pedalers for Prostate with his experience. He is currently contacting others to help get Pedalers for Prostate some more attention. John is a prostate cancer survivor himself, consistently keeping track of his PSA levels. He is like the many whom Pedalers for Prostate hopes they can help through their journey.

Kay Shinton
Kay Shinton
Meanwhile, over in the UK our good friend Kay Shinton is raising funds for two pieces of much needed diagnostic equipment for the detection of bowel cancer and other serious bowel conditions for the colorectal unit at The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust. Kay is a cancer survivor. Would you jump out of an airplane to raise funds for necessary cancer equipment? Kay did! We are very grateful to Kay for the advice that she has provided to Sam / Pedalers for Prostate.
